Meat fest

Delhi is proving to be far more entertaining in the search for that perfect meal.. and needless to say, I am not finding it in restaurants.

Last saturday we managed to make our way into the bylanes of old delhi - near Jama Masjid. Of course it was in honour of Ramazan (or Ramadan) and to sample the delicious fare there.

The lane was one pretty sight and I really missed out on not having a camera. It was alive, throbbing, lit, noisy, teeming and full of potential. Huge mounds of food.. most of which was unrecognisable to me with full families out in the regalia (was a saturday night after all), most of them crowded onto cylce richshaws... trying to make their way without hitting, too often, pedestrians.

I originally thought we would be eating off road sides stalls and was surprised that we actually went to an established place called Kareem's. A veritable institution in Delhi am told, the first time I had biryani from here, I was not impressed. I was told to discount it because it was take out. This time the experience proved other wise.

A standard menu (as was told again) of mutton burra, shammi and seekh kebabs with unbelievably soft 'naan', mint chutney and onions was shortly dispensed off. Delicious phirni and taste-only version of shaahi tukda followed. Despite all intentions of gluttony prevalent, I just could not bring myself to ask for more food. Other people on the table with me were ready to eat biryani just so that we could say we tasted it.

Though, in retrospect, am sure we would have found equally delicious place by the roadside but if promises are anything to go by I will probably be there the on last friday before Eid as well, in this month itself and gorge some more.

Any suggestions besides Kareem's there?

I visited Delhi as a tourist in August 2004 and Karim's was one place I went to -- after the bellboy, hotel receptionist, taxidrivers and a barber in Connaught Place all recommended the place to me. The biryani didnt impress me much but the seekh kabab certainly did. Thought it was heavenly the way it was soft and didnt manage to crumble. Next time I ever visit Delhi, Karim's is on my must-see list.
